Description
This program will first review the diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), as outlined in the DSM-V. It will next cover how modern-day dieting recommendations lead to symptoms consistent with OCD for many clients. The program will demonstrate how many clients who are suffering with food, weight, and body image issues do not qualify for an eating disorder diagnosis, but they do have symptoms consistent with OCD. We can now label this as Dieting OCD This offers clinicians a template and framework from which to treat disordered eating behaviors more effectively.
We will review how the evidenced based gold standard treatment for OCD, known as Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) can also be used for treating the newly defined Dieting OCD. We will also learn how the evidenced based model of Intuitive Eating can be used to reduce and eliminate Dieting OCD symptoms as well. Lastly, a review of how stand by treatments such as CBT, DBT, Family Systems Models, and Psychodynamic Therapies can and should still be used in combination with these modalities to effectively teach clients to manage their emotions separately without the use of food.
